Burnham on Sea Holiday Village, near Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

A popular holiday destination for hundreds of years, there’s plenty to see and do in this beachside town. Here are our top tips to help you enjoy your summer UK break by the sea.

1. Grand pier

Originally opened in 1904, the pier was rebuilt in 2010 after being destroyed in a fire in 2008. Now it is as popular as ever, with plenty of attractions to visit along the length of the pier.

2. Sand sculpture festival

An array of spectacular sand sculptures are on display in Weston-Super-Mare from April to September – look out for them along the seafront.

3. Helicopter museum

The largest dedicated helicopter museum in the world. Discover over 80 helicopters and ride on flight simulators.

4. Weston beach race

Over 100,000 spectators descend on Weston to watch the annual beach race. The beach is transformed with giant mountains of sand forming a fiercely difficult track, and many off-road vehicles take on the race. This October is the 33rd year of the race.

5. Brean Down Fort

Walk along the headland to the imposing Victorian Brean Down Fort (now a National Trust site), built on dramatic cliffs 60 feet above sea level on the headland at Brean Down, 9 miles south of Weston.

Where to stay

You are spoilt for choice in the local area, as well as a selection of holiday cottages, there are several holiday parks. Burnham on Sea Holiday Village is set in 95 acres of parkland just a few hundred yards from Burnham beach and a short distance from Weston-Super-Mare. Alternatively, Purn Holiday Village is set in countryside only five minutes’ drive from Weston.
