Visit Castles in the UK

September 6th, 2012 by Kirstin

Britain is well known for its vast amount of grand castles. Some of these castles have been reduced mainly to ruins but there are still many more that are open to the public and people are free to wander around their battlement towers and long corridors and take a step back in time.

Windsor Castle

Located in Berkshire, Windsor Castle is one of the most well known castles in the UK with a history dating back almost 1000 years. It is also the largest inhabited castle in the world having had many monarchs and members of state and royalty staying inside its walls with residents still living in it today, including Queen Elizabeth who stays regularly. It is definitely a great day out for all the family with so much history to see and so much to do. You can take a walk through the grand apartments and visit the beautiful St George’s Chapel; watch the changing of the guard or climb the towers to take in the spectacular rolling views over the Thames Valley. There are additional tours available for an extra price such as a look around the great kitchens and even a chance to get a private evening tour of the state apartments. Kids will love seeing the amazing sparkling treasures of the Royal family and so it is an interesting and exciting day out for all.

Warwick Castle

A fantastic fun family day out with loads to see and do. Overlooking the River Avon, there is always something to do at this 11th century castle from live entertainment, battle re-enactments and ghost story telling, and it’s especially good for children. Why not take your own little princess to the Princess Tower where you can hear magical tales or, for the older kids, brave the Castle Dungeon where you can learn about the gruesome and terrifying stories of the crimes that play into the castle’s past. And then there is the castle itself with its grand halls and beautiful rooms to look around. There is definitely something for everyone at Warwick Castle and it’s a fantastic day out all year around.

Edinburgh Castle

Sitting on Castle Rock overlooking the city of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle is grand in both size and splendour. For those interested in history, this castle makes for an ideal day trip as there is so much history to be seen. Believed to have been occupied from as early as 900 BC, Castle Rock has been a stronghold for over 3000 years and so any budding historians will take great interest in wandering the Castle’s walls and corridors. You can visit the room where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI and see the Crown Jewels of Scotland in the Crown Room. As well as looking around the castle, there are also many events that go on within the grounds such as guided tours, performances by costumed actors and even open air concerts that liven up the usually quiet nature of the castle itself.
